STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING FOR SWIMMERS

Most, if not all, competitive swimmers engage in some sort of strength and conditioning training. Ox Strong Health believe that it is an essential part of a swimmer’s overall preparation strategy. 

Training for swimmers, both in and out of the water, needs to reflect the demands of the sport and prepare the body appropriately for competition. The importance of a well-designed strength training program comes in to focus when we reflect upon the physical demands of swimming. These include the demands of the swimming stroke and race, individuality of the athlete, the uniqueness of performing in water, repetitive nature of the strokes and the tendency for imbalanced to be formed.

I have been lifting in the gym for almost 20 years, as a key part of my training programme. However, one area that I have always been weak on is deadlifting and squats. I knew Nathan had a great background in swimming having competed together for GB Juniors and for medals at Senior Nationals. Allied to this Nathan has developed great expertise in powerlifting and this is something I felt I could really benefit from. We had an initial phone conversation, where I explained what I had been doing and where I wanted to be. Nathan then created a tailored programme for me, to work on the specific areas that I needed to improve.
